Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Peggy B — 29 Dec 2018
Emily Blunt stole the show, perfecting askance glances. The lamplighters-on-bikes were fun (think ET). The bathtub dive-to-the-sea captivating (think Finding Dory). Disappointed in the musical score--I can still hum several songs from the original film, A Spoonful of Sugar, Super-cali-fragil-istic, and Feed the Birds are all on my shower singing song list with Chim Chim Cheree as a shampoo encore.
Alas, I left the theater this afternoon humming none of the new songs. To me the signature thumbs-up for a musical is just that: do I remember any of the songs walking to my car? Nada. It's worth seeing if you are a Mary Poppins fan.
Otherwise rent the original.
