Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Susan M — 03 Jan 2019
MPR is lovely. Emily Blunt is perfect as Mary Poppins, with the right mixture of stern (as she should be, in PJ Travers view) and caring. She gives subtle cues - a little smile here, a wistful glance there as when she has to go. wonderful. I also liked the music and the adventures in this version - the songs and plot hold together better than in the original movie.
The critics are missing the point. Kids who see this movie aren't going to be wondering how it compares to Julie Andrews' version. They will see it for itself. All my family loved it, kids and adults. The only maybe downside: will some younger children find the bad wolf scene too scary? it's over quickly, but I wondered.
