Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Thomas N — 03 Jan 2019
Spoilers: The moral of the story, money fixes everything. It's an entire reboot. I'd have hoped they'd give some small nod to the original mother and father in imagery, yet that didn't happen.
The mother of the new children passed away and we don't know exactly when or why, but the story isn't about that or healing that loss. It's about them being in a predicament caused by the father wanting to be an artist and running out of money so he mortgages the house.
In doing so he puts their place of living in danger and the movie is all worry with Mary being a pacifier, but not offering to be a fix, to the children as we forget about the lost mother and focus on how to find a stock certificate that would pay to fix the problem.
The villain being a banker that for "reasons" tore out the page with the recored of the stock and tossed it in his fire place throws me, as they could have easily said his family had a beef with the Banks or that the bank needed every house it could get as the depression was putting a squeeze on money.
.. but no... they just decided he was going to rip out a page and toss it in the fire, no motivation given, villain created. In the end, the moral is the diametrically apposed opposite of the original movie, and michael learns that love is not the answer, feeding birds with your tuppens is stupid when you need every cent you've got to hold on to your home.
Had they lost the house and shown the family happy in a smaller apartment perhaps, that would have been a heartwarming classic Disney Scenario. In this, it was the house has to be saved so they can all be happy.
And it was. Moral of the story: Money fixes everything.
