Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Movie M — 13 Jan 2019
Reviewed 1.9.19 Emily Blunt does her best to fill Julie Andrew's very large shoes and succeeds by creating her own version of the beloved umbrella wielding genie. But as the original excelled with the introduction of each beautifully crafted song, the sequel hits a flat note in the same regard.
The magic is indeed back on Cherry Tree Lane, from the whimsical set pieces to the hand drawn animation (welcome back penguins!), yet with the exception of 'The Place Where Lost Things Go,' none of the new tunes rank alongside the eponymous canon. And like the original, it runs too long.
Yet I imagine that no adult that loved the original as a child is capable of providing a truly unbiased review. It's simply too iconic. But I imagine countless children will hold this new Mary equally close to their hearts. As expressed in the closing scene, none of the jaded adults will remember her magic tomorrow anyway, but the open minds of the children will continue to believe.
