Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Scott L — 29 Dec 2018
Always difficult to follow on from a classic, the film echoes the original but introduces some stellar performances to create a feel good movie for the holiday season. IT DOES APE THE ORIGINAL IN MANY WAYS BUT THE CAST, CHARACTERS, SCRIPT AND FOR THE MOST PART NEW MUSIC MAKE THIS A WIN AS A FILM.
ONLY DOWNSIDE FOR ME WAS THE, IN MY VIEW, RELATIVELY HOPELESS ATTEMPT TO MIMIC THE ORIGINAL BY BRINGING IN LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA WHO IS A POOR CHARICATURE OF DICK VAN DYKE, WHO STEALS THE SHOW WITH HIS OWN PERFORMANCE.
UNFORTUNATELY THE FORCED NATURE OF LIN-MANUEL SPOILT THE FILM FOR ME BUT NOT AS MUCH AS TO RUIN WHAT IS A LOVELY FILM. EMILY BLUNT IS SUPERB, THE SUPPORTING CAST CREATES MAGIC, FUN AND HUMOUR IN MUICH THE SAME WAY THAT PADDINGTON 2 DID.
WORTH GOING TO SEE.
