Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Kevin A — 25 Dec 2018
Darned if you do ... Darned if you Don't... If the movie was totally different the the original there would critics. Same is true if they played it alike. This is a charming and at times touching yet fun movie the whole family will enjoy.
Although the critics seem to miss the point of this movie (although more stern like the books]), Mary Poppins Returns to restore the innocence of the kids after both Michael and Jane Banks are now grown up and have suffered over the lose of a spouse during the great depression and having to deal with losing their childhood home to the banks.
Mary Poppins Returns to restore the childhood innocence of the younger children that have gone through turmoil. Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel give truly outstanding musical performances. If you listen to the lyrics of the songs they tie into the story.
The reprise of "Nothings Gone Forever" (sung by the kids) helps Michael Banks learn the all is right around you. Dick Van Dyke gives the must anticipated punch line that references and ties in the original.
I strongly recommend this. As a side note: the music gives an homage with similar vibe while giving additional musical notes like a cabaret with moments of rap (A Book Is Not The Cover & The Royal Doulton Music Hall).
