Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Radford B — 21 Dec 2018
I found myself yawning through many of the music scenes, and that is Mary Poppins Returns' downfall. There are no catchy tunes to get stuck in your head, unlike the original.
Emily Blunt does another fine acting job, but not even she can turn this movie into the hit of its predecessor. Lin-Manual Miranda's British sounds more Puerto Rican than British.
The animated scenes lack the charm of the original, and the special effects are so-so, the one exception being the bathtub scene. And someone apparently forgot to tell Rob Marshall that physically your arm can't be perpendicular if you're holding onto a balloon and floating, unless you're one beefed-up gymnast.
You want to see Emily Blunt give one of get finest performances, rent A Quiet Place. That's the movie that should have gotten the Best Picture nod, not this movie.
