Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Nicholas T — 23 Dec 2018
A 2 hour slog through a movie that's rushing itself is a torturous thing indeed. Mary Poppins Returns rides the coattails of its predecessor hard in this adaptation. Doesn't have a lick of the magic, and none of my disbelief was suspended for even a moment.
Every scene flowed together in a hurried way, like they were trying to cram as many songs into the movie as possible. They could have explored some themes such as corruption in the bank, went further with metaphors like the wolf with the watch, but chose not to in lieu of things like Mary's cousin (poor Meryl), and the romance between Jane and Jack.
Disappointing to say the least, but at the end I was able to say "That was cute" and didn't feel too bad about it.
