Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Mike W — 24 Dec 2018
Coming from someone who worshipped the original as a child, Mary Poppins Returns was all that I could hope for and more. Anyone who knows me well knows how much I loved that film.
Yes while Julie Andrews was a better singer, Emily Blunt is a better actress (also she sings beautifully in her own right). I loved her take on the character. She was hilarious! The child actors had more complexity and comedic timing in Returns than the original. I also had my reservations on Lin Manuel Miranda (I low key donï¿ 1/2(TM)t like the Hamilton music, sshhh!), but he gave an awesome performance.
I loved all the new songs, too! The score was beautifully written. It had the charming similarity of the original as if it were the same composer expanding on a previous work as one movement tying together seamlessly. (I.e. John Williams in each Star Wars trilogy).
We rewatched the original the night before so we could have it fresh in our minds. We almost fell asleep in the second half. But that reminds me I usually stopped watching it halfway through as a kid. it kinda gets boring, right?
I feel that in many ways Returns is even a better film. It does not compete with the original as it is a sequel, but it enhances and complements it. Even the very reason she Returns in the first place and the message is, in contrast with the message of the original film, poetic.
So stop trying to sound smart and say you hated it. I simply donï¿ 1/2(TM)t believe you.
ï¿ 1/2And Iï¿ 1/2(TM)m NEVER incorrect!ï¿ 1/2Â?
