Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Angie M — 20 Dec 2018
As a fan of the novels who can understand the authorâ(TM)s reservations about including musical numbers and animation, I had hoped for a remake of the original story without them but with more of the highly imaginative vignettes the first film omitted.
Barring that, this new film is a lovely new visit with Mary and her friends. One reviewer complained that Bluntâ(TM)s Mary is rude. This is totally in keeping with the novelâ(TM)s depiction. The film is uneven in places, but overall it heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
It doesnâ(TM)t have to be Julie Andrewsâ(TM) Mary or Emily Bluntâ(TM)s Mary. It can be both and. I love both of them. The other performances are excellent too. Dick Van Dyke is a wonder.
