Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Joseph D — 20 Dec 2018
Well...this was unexpected.
MARY POPPINS RETURNS.
I grew up knowing the original story, so there was a lot to live up to. At over 2 hours, this surprise sequel, honestly, did a pretty good job.
Emily Blunt really put her all into bringing Julie Andrews' most famous character back to life, & I think she succeeded. I honestly believed I was seeing the same Mary Poppins I saw years ago, older, more traveled, but still the same. The rest of the cast all did an amazing job, bringing back old characters, & introducing new ones. We even got some cameos & a surprise actor, no spoilers but rest assured, they're worth seeing.
The effects & set design were a treat. I really believed I was in 1930s-ish London, the Banks family home, & Mary Poppins' fantastical world. And while there was some CGI, it felt like most of the effects were done in the classic movies' fashion.
The music was classic Poppins & classic Disney, they went all out, the choreography also fit the film perfectly, like the dancers from the original film time hopped right to this one!
Mary Poppins Returns wasn't a sequel anyone asked for, but I'm glad we got it. It respected the past, while continuing the story in a believable way, & reminding us of things we, sadly, shouldn't have forgotten, but did. 4 stars outta 5, I hereby dub this film respectfully supercalafragalisticexpialadosious.
