Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Ryan H — 23 Dec 2010
Perfection. Such a sad but heartfelt story about two people who just happened to need each other at about the same time. Mary is a lonely girl who needs a friend, so she picks a random name in the American phone book and decides to write him.
Max is a lonely man who doesn't know the meaning of friendship or love. The interaction between the two creates so many emotions. The direction, the art, and the music all come together to create one of the best animated films I have ever seen.
Not a single moment is wasted. Elliot understands that his material is sad, so he adds many little funny moments to lift up his audience. It seemed repetitive to have so much poop in the movie, but it represents their lives: full of shit.
They step in it, they get it on themselves, but in the end they have to keep moving. I hope one day I can make a movie so devastating yet loving.
