Great performances, beautiful animation and wonderful character development but I felt the story to be somewhat contrived and artificial, in the sense that I could not think of one other thing that could otherwise happen in someone's life to evoke sympathy that did not happen in the the life of either Mary or Max.
Except perhaps for losing a child, and even there the idea was toyed with. But perhaps that just my personal proclivities. By all means a worthwhile watch. Perhaps moreso if you are somewhat less cynical than me.
