Review of Mary and Max (2009) by David L — 13 Mar 2012
Mary and Max has heart, charm and brain. This is a rare animated film these days which is unique and which deals with adult themes. The animation is magnificent, the plot may be simple, but it is based on a true story and you can see it by how realistic it looks.
It is definitely better than "Up" and it is a shame that Mary and Max didn't even receive a nomination for Best Animated Feature of 2009. The film explores the themes of friendship, ilness and loneliness expertly and the movie is emotionally very resonant and it can even make you cry.
The characters are strange, but by the end of the film you really start to care about them. Overall, Mary and Max is imaginative, poignant and sometimes sad, it is such an underrated film and it is one of the best animated films ever made.
