Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Brandon S — 10 Apr 2012
Offbeat Australian animation, that might well have worked as a quirky live action indie, but that instead uses claymation to give writer / director / designer Adam Elliot complete control over his world and characters.
The creative effort involved is painstaking and complex, but the result is a beautiful simplicity which mirrors the unlikely (but believable) central relationship. Not a family film as such, but certainly suitable for children who've read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.
Though there is humour throughout, the tone is one of resigned melancholy and the final scenes are really quite achingly moving. (Incidentally, this is only the 4th film that has ever succeeded in making my daughter cry.
) Strongly recommended (though you kind of have to like animation in the first place).
