Human beings are social animals not meant for life in isolation from one-another; but we're not all wired the same. Mary and Max's miraculous relationship forms out of one lonely child's desperate attempts at connection whilst finding a pen pal perplexed by -- and unable to mesh with -- humanity.

The stories they share are altogether peculiar, funny, and absolutely heart-breaking, illustrated pitch-perfect with creative use of claymation that may make you question whether some bigger animation studios have confined themselves to a single trick.

Mary and Max is a story about our need for each other, and an ode to friendship in its myriad forms. I rarely will say this because I think it's incredibly hyperbolic and far overused, but: this is life-affirming stuff.

PS-"Perpetuum Mobile" has found its true home in the opening credits and transitions of this movie. PPS-I may or may not have shed a tear at the end. PPPS-...
