Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Joel B — 03 Aug 2012
With such gems as Up, Coraline and the Fantastic Mr. Fox released this year, 2009 may be the best movie time for animated features in a very long time. Thing is, the very best of the bunch might be what you least expected: an independent clay-mated Australian film.
Mary and Max's bleak yet lively world will set your eyes ablaze, but the storyline will do the same to your heart. The thoughtful and heartbreaking tale of a friendship between two outcasts is endearing to say the least, and would move even the most stubborn movie critic to tears (exampled in myself).
It's a shame that this film hasn't been picked up for wide distribution (probably because it's an animated film that deals with material like drinking, smoking, drugs and sex), but I can not urge you enough to see this film if the opportunity arises.
Like the chance meeting of Mary and Max themselves, seeing this movie is a magnificent gift from fate.
