Review of Marvin's Room (1996) by Emily B — 29 May 2009
I'm always nostalgic for 90's drama where they take me back to a time where it was just a camera filming the simple reactions of characters, set in a generic soundtrack with no more than 2-3 different settings.
Probably most have seen this movie, but seeing the cover alot, this movie was always in my hit list. Nobody can dispute that no actress can carry a scene like Meryl Streep, and although there's no indication that she's supposed to be the main star, through the movie it is clear that by the end the movie, it's about her.
Dicaprio is solid as the troubled youth that ignites the tension between Streep and Keaton, but his character is still a bit reminiscent of his character in the Basketball Diaries. It's definitely a feel good movie that reminds you about the preciousness of life without trying to be overly preachy.
