Review of Martyrs (2008) by Rodney W — 22 Oct 2012
There was an interesting backbone to this movie, but it got lost in a tangle of mismatched themes and stop/start pacing, feeling more like three movies back to back than one sound composition. Its intrigue was buried by its senseless torture (you can only have so much before it becomes a functionless hindrance to progress).
Its plot was lost in its grabs at originality, focusing so hard on being edgy and clever the strength of a consistent narrative was lacking, to the film's detriment. Cut the middle 30 minutes and tidy up the dialogue to make a much more engaging and impacting product, but it's a little too late for that.
Skip it.
