Review of Martyrs (2008) by Patrick H — 18 Jan 2010
I realy do not want to spoil this one for any one so I'll just start off with saying one thing - Watch this movie!
This was my third dvelve into the recent new wave of french horrors and with a short praise of a friend I guess I did have some high expectations, but to be honest I could NOT have expected this.
It's a nuanced and multifacited (if you want to find them they'r there) story, and that's not talking about the progression of it during its 1 hour 37 minutes, but that deals with the psychologoical causes and effects of terror - the psychological, physical, emotional side and more. Yes, more indeed.
I can understand that some might find the story silly (come on, it's a horror movie!) and maybe event take it's very high quality of production as being to "artsy", personaly I get off on that stuff, well, I propobly go off on a lot of stuff in this movie, it pushes so many of my current buttons that it is almost a bit silly, it turns quite erotic at times (intentionaly by the production in some cases, I'm shure, though maybe some won't agree with me on that).
If you do like a high end production, a well told storyline with quite a few twists (or lets call them chapters) and a philosophical punchline (and possibly do go off on short haired strong women looking absolutely beautiful in bruises) then this is indeed a movie for you!
