Review of Martyrs (2008) by Kyrstin L — 06 Feb 2010
I'm not quite sure what to make of this film. It's purposefully repellent and certainly achieves the visceral experience for the audience it intended. However, I'm not sure there was a worthy or artistic reason to justify the violence and torture portrayed in the film.
"Hostel" and "Audition" did. "Turistas" and "Friday the 13th" did not. This film seems to fall somewhere in between these two extremes. It does not have the intelectual heft to back-up it's pretentious nature, but at the same time it's a well crafted film and is certainly something more than a simple popcorn horror film.
It's a unique film, but is definitely not for all tastes.
