Review of Martyrs (2008) by Li Ting L — 19 Jun 2010
If you really dig brutal, explicit, uncomfortable screen violence then you won't regret seeing Martyrs. The movie doesn't pull any punches with it's imagery. Alot of terrible things happen to the people in this film and it's all depicted in great, exacting detail.
This helps to maintain an strong sense of dread throughout the movie because the gruesome violence always lives up the suspense building it up. Because it's shot and acted like an art film it can come off as a bit self important and manipulative at times.
But as a horror flick, it really delivers.
