Review of Martyrs (2008) by Chase V — 25 Jun 2010
Martyrs is absolutely devoid of any hope. None. Whatsoever. Without giving away too much of the asinine Kubrick/Hitchcock rip-off story structure, it goes to say that when you're expecting some kind of redeeming, if only faint, ray of hope towards the film's final moments, the rug is pulled from underneath of you and you fall into a well of poison-tipped spikes.
It's the most torturous, fear-inducing, and sickening film I've seen, and there was not a moment when I did not feel nauseated. For that constant and consistent feeling of disarray and despair, I have to commend the film, despite it's apparent and uneasy portrayal on violence against (and by) women.
Just make sure you have an iron stomach and superb willpower when you pop in the DVD.
