Review of Martyrs (2008) by Je G — 16 Nov 2010
Whoah....
Whoah....
What the Jesus did I just watch?
Another entry of the French Extreme genre (comme l'haute tension, a l'interier, etc) Martyrs is all sorts of effed up. It tells the story of Lucie, a young girl who escaped from a dark torture chamber. She's taken to an orphanage but the scars of her time before this film begins are deep - both physically and mentally. The core of the movie takes place 15 years later as Lucie and her best friend Anna try to exact revenge to her captures. This is only the beginning.
I'm not exactly sure saying I liked martyrs is right. The movie is almost impossible to stop watching It's disturbing, graphic, gory, uncomfortable and unsettling. The pacing of the film is a little uneven and the ending is really unfathomable. Certainly not for everyone.
