Review of Martyrs (2008) by Tamatai N — 02 Apr 2011
There is a large section of this movie which is almost nihilistic in its perpetual unremitting violence and desolation but there is a sensibility underlying it that means it never gets too overwhelming, the film maker, while showing you the horror of the captives existence, protects you from the full horror of it - unlike Gaspar Noe or at times Cronenberg.
The denouement lifts the film to a more lofty plane and explains what we have been watching in a way that is thought provoking and horrifying. Well worth a watch, this one.
