Review of Martyrs (2008) by Bill W — 19 Oct 2012
David Fincher has said "I don't know how much movies should entertain. I'm interested in movies that scar." Well, if you agree -- and I mean *completely* agree -- Martyrs is the horror movie for you.
It's so violent and disturbing that it actually comes full circle, transcending the genre and turning into something else entirely. A lot of the movie is like an endurance test, and about an hour into it I started questioning the point of it all.
Luckily for my sanity, there *is* a point eventually, and it's pretty provocative, mostly redeeming the rest of the movie. The ending is unlike anything else. It's hopeful and devastating, inspiring and depressing, beautiful and disgusting.
It's the stuff of nightmares. Which I can pretty much guarantee you'll have if you watch this.
