Review of Martyrs (2008) by Sylvester K — 02 Dec 2012
A film that should not be watched for entertainment. Pascal Laugier went beyond the censorship limit in this gruesome revenge thriller. Again, like Haute Tension, it builds up a false sense of safety then BANG, massacre and torture.
The film contains psychological aspects about how people react to the abuses and also some satire elements plus paranoia. Feminism was also explored, to say the least, the film is really intelligent without the use of excessive gore but graphic violence that actually was meaningful in the context.
French people should make more of these films.
