Review of Martyrs (2008) by Todd F — 19 Jan 2013
A twisted and sadistic horror movie that is brilliant on many levels, carnally, psychologically, and intellectually. One of the hardest to watch films I've ever seen, this is not for the faint of heart in any sense.
It is brutal and climactic in its ultraviolence. That said, the entire film is, in my opinion, brought to a grinding and jarring halt by a pointless third act and conclusion that left me shrugging more than pondering as seemed the intention.
There were many great strings unraveled during the plot, and the way they are left untied satisfyingly at the climax leaves you with the impression that much of the torture porn that teases itself as so deep and artistic ends up being, sadly, hollow and depraved in the shadow of its ending.
