Review of Martyrs (2008) by Jules E — 10 Nov 2011
If I had to sum up Martyrs in one word it would be: "visceral". This film was my first venture into the French horror scene, and what an introduction it was for me. The concept alone is highly intriguing.
A young woman seeks revenge on the family that kidnapped and tortured her for years. However, things do not turn out to be as they seem as the woman and her friend discover a much more nefarious figure working in the background.
If you can stomach the gut wrenching violence and brutality used in this film it is a visual treat with beautiful cinematography and a wonderfully haunting score from Seppuku Paradigm. The film's leading antagonist, Mademoiselle sums up the film best by stating, "keep doubting".
