Review of Martyrs (2008) by Renzo V — 12 Mar 2014
This French Canadian horror film doesn't hold anything back. It's extreme, brutal and totally original. Conceptually, it's quite brilliant. The first half is particularly intense. The amount of twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat.
It's frightening, gruesome and unflinching. Unfortunately, the second half doesn't quite live up to the terror and brilliance of the first half. Watching a girl get tortured becomes very tiresome and too unpleasant after a while.
They could have summed up the final 40 minutes in just 10. That said, the first 45 minutes is amazing and well worth seeing. There's clearly a nod to Passion of Joan of Arc here.
