Review of Marty (1955) by Jonathan C — 19 Oct 2008
"Simple" is the name of the game. Hard to believe this was a huge Oscar winner, but then the Academy usually does favor popularity over quality or innovation. It has a very stagey quality with some nice dialogue, and kudos for making the main character a rather, uh, "sensitive" lad, but the drama here is sort of hard to swallow, especially by contemporary standards.
On an interesting note, I'm stunned by the apparent lack of critical discourse on the gay subtext of the film: if someone out there is looking for an essay topic, I'd highly recommend using this film as a case study.
