Review of Marty (1955) by James M — 20 Jun 2010
Sweet and sublime is Marty. An interesting choice for Best Picture, but in the everyday life it is evoking, it is perfect. Ernest Borgnine plays the titles character with a grace seemingly unknown to him before then.
Marty is a gentle soul and the ways Ernest has us come this understanding is perfectly written and subtly acted. Betsy Blair plays the girl for Marty and the way she does so much with so little is beautiful.
It is strange to see the film tantalize with larger issues, deep issues, but move on quickly, recongizing them, not dismissing, but putting them into play for that is seemingly how life works; we come back to the big issues eventually.
I swear it is hard to watch this movie and not have a smile on your face the whole time. It is sweet and charming and its screenplay is a beautiful mix of subtle comedy and romance.
