Review of Martin (1978) by Sheena F — 01 Jan 2009
I'll preface: I am not a Romero fan. At all.
At all.
I don't like any of his zombie movies.
None.
Not the old ones, not the new ones.
But I like this movie. I like it a lot.
With his sing-songy voice and bad haircut, Romero's Martin looks like he may well have escaped from an episode of "Starcade," but he's actually an old-ass vampire. He's got a taste for blood, and... not much else going for him. He's a big time loser. The antidote the zeitgeist needs to "Twilight," Anne Rice adaptations, and all other romantic fantasies about being a literal malevolent parasite.
What stands out about this film isn't the acting (which is "meh"), or the cinematography (which I don't judge movies on anyway), but the unwavering attention to detail; with minor flourishes that hint at lush back stories, and plot developments which suggest an almost uncomfortable level of thought was put into the logistics of satisfying blood lust.
