Review of Martian Child (2007) by Philip P — 17 Dec 2008
Wow where to start. Well for those who don't know this is a story of a eccentric, yet brilliant science fiction writer played by John Cusack, or as I like to call it, John Cusack playing himself, lol!! No but honestly he is great very tender and dynamic, he knew exactly when to be the frustrated parent, the one who tries too hard, and ultimately a good one.
This movie is not only great because you see his progression as a parent, but also as a human being. A lot of people found the little boy to be annoying and I guess I can see why he would petrub alot of people, most of the time his character is ridiculous, but when he needed to show emotion I thought the actor did a good job and him and Cusack are just magical together.
Amanda Peet does a good job as Cusack's love interest/sister in law(at the start of the film Cusack's wife has been dead for two years) and the romantic element is nice and ultimately you may wish as I did that Peet was given more screen time.
In the end though this is the story of a boy trying to find where he belongs and find some value in himself and a man relizing these same qualities about himself. As a former social outcast I can speak to how adequately this film showed the mix of emotions and the divided psych, being abandoned or being treated wrongly because your a bit different can create, where in public you seem social, bright, poignant and happy; and when your alone how you feel, lonely, flustered, inadequate and unloved.
Ultimately th ough through this film and my own life I have learned that sometimes it's perfectly fine to be different. Great tearjerker of a film, go check it out, it's definitely worth full price!!
