Review of Martian (2015) by Nate B — 27 Jun 2016
The quintessential example of a star vehicle for the masses. For a movie where the main character is stranded in space, there's almost no conflict, you never doubt the conclusion, and 90% of the cast are barely 2 dimensional placeholders meant to trick you into thinking there's anyone in this movie beside matt damon.
Its mild, inoffensive, and utterly ignorable. it's really sad to watch a triumphant moment with people celebrating and feel totally disconnected and rooting for something to go horribly wrong just so the characters will have to deal with SOMETHING.
There's a few funny quips, no one did a bad job, but I'm a fan of Ridley Scott and know he's capable of so much more.
