Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by David H — 18 Jul 2012
Hands down, this is the best film I've seen all year. Debut director, Sean Durkin, accurately exhibits the disturbing effects suffered by those victimized by mind-controlling subcultures when returning to main stream society.
Newbie to the screen Elizabeth Olson as Martha (aka Marcy May) skillfully depicts the depression and disassociation brought on by cult casualty and the distress they impose on loved ones during the difficult adjustment.
In Martha's case her sibling sister, Lucy, who loves her, wants to help, but can't fathom how to deal with her sister's unpredictable behavior. This is a discomforting story, downright realistic and psychological drama at its very best.
Bravo.
