Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Emilie L — 26 Feb 2012
Subtle and beautifully shot.
The suspense that the film builds up throughout makes for some uncomfortable viewing and the fact that it doesn't lead to anything clear in the end is frustrating--but I imagine that this vague, unfinished quality of the film is meant to reflect Martha's psychology and to that extent it is a success.
On a more personal note, watching Martha's helpless and obscure slide into instability--which reminded me of someone sleepwalking across treacherous terrain--reminded me of how little empathy I have for the mentally unstable.
