Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Ioana O — 26 Feb 2012
Don't understand the admiration for this movie. The heroine's a cypher and the story is ridiculous. Not the cult. The girl. I have friends who've been in cults. The girl in this story would have had to be under thirteen and to have spent more than 2 years in that situation to be so completely clueless as to how people in the real world behave.
But she appears to be 18 or 19 and the only excuse for all her weirdness would be that she was maybe a little psychotic from the get go. Which is not revealed to us in the backstory. She's so expressionless that we know nothing about what's going on in her head and her few remarks are no clue.
The ending doesn't tell us whether what's happening is in her head or represents what is really going on. I actually PAID to see this on payperview. I want my money back. No story. No characters.
No emotion. And no ending.
