Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Jessicaann D — 11 Mar 2012
This year's 'Winter's Bone' is the story of a girl who has escapes from a cult but can't detach herself from the memories and regrets of her two years spent there. Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of those Olsens, is a tremendous find.
She has an angelic face but underneath we see the scars of a once independent girl who has been silenced by experience and a tyrannical man. As in 'Winter's Bone' that man is John Hawkes and once again he s the highlight of the film.
As good as Olsen and Hawkes are, however, this film does not quit live up to 'Bone' as he never see her really delve into her issues, instead we at left as she feels, on the outside looking in.
