Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Nate L — 11 Mar 2012
Elizabeth Olsen stars as Martha in this gripping drama about a woman who leaves a cult to return to her family two years later. The story unfolds and the audience slowly learns the events that unfolded in the cult that have scarred Martha.
We get to see her try to return to normal life and deal with the trauma she's experienced, while making sure she isn't found by the leader of the cult. The performance turned in by Elizabeth Olsen is amazing and haunting and just goes to show that this lady is definitely one to watch for in upcoming projects.
The story is a great thriller that unfolds slowly but will have you on the edge of your seat begging for more details. It's definitely got an indie-film vibe but all around it was a brilliant film that I can't recommend strongly enough.
The only complaint I have is the end of the story feels very abrupt and unresolved. I had hoped for something conclusive but the ending as is feels more realistic and ends up being as haunting as the rest of the movie.
