Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Martin I — 26 Apr 2012
A film presented as drama yet with eerie undertones of psychological thriller, MMMM is a wonderfully shot and acted indie that gets under the skin. A brilliant debut from Elizabeth Olsen anchors an unsettling story of the loss of innocents, identity and safety which ultimately leads to paranoia.
Amid this confusion, Martha (Olsen) struggles to re-adjust to a normal family life; blurring the edges between the past and present with confusion and uncertainty. Often haunting in it's direction, the tone of the film lingers under the skin; however, most will be extremely frustrated with the films abrupt ending.
Although possibly intended to draw intrigue amid such ambiguity, the end really delivers a weak finish to a promisingly taut tale.
