Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Wayne F — 21 Jul 2012
A tense, edgy, but low key, independent 'thriller' that follows Martha after she 'escapes' from a cult and seeks refuge with her estranged sister. It reminds a little of Winter's Bone, not in the story, but with its sedate pacing, central female lead and strong naturalistic performances.
The finish is abrupt, ambiguous and frustrating - but that's OK, this is not a 'Hollywood' tale that has a formulated end. What happens next is the audience's guess.
