Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Daniel T — 31 Jul 2012
There are moments in film that last because the connection between the actress and the material is something to be heralded. It happened with Kirsten Dunst in "The Virgin Diaries," it happened with Scarlett Johansson in "Lost in Translation," and it happened with Jennifer Lawrence in "Winter's Bone.
" Here, in Elizabeth Olsen's debut film, it happens once more. Olsen plays the survivor of a cult, or maybe she plays the victim of modern society. What's definite is that Olsen owns the skin of a character that's as real as her own.
Her performance is subtle and astonishing, and the movie is unsettling enough that it leaves you wondering just how many Martha Marcy May Marlene's there are in the world, caught between two terrible realities.
