Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Gwen W — 13 Feb 2013
This film was mesmerizing - I loved the way the timelines constantly shift from the past to the present reflecting the main character's confusion and turmoil. John Hawkes is one of my favourite contemporary actors.
He plays a cult leader in an understated realistic way which adds to the excruciating suspense and unsettling tone. Elizabeth Olsen proves her talent far exceeds that of her creepy twin sisters and turns in a bravura performance as an awkward inscrutable young woman with a damaged psyche.
I can't wait to see more from this young filmmaker. What a fantastic script!
