Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Nick R — 28 Apr 2013
An exceptionally well-made film that features scenes of haunting resonance and enigmatic magnetism. Olsen is exceptional, and Hawkes carries himself with an effortless, menacing force. Durkin has constructed a tightly wound and deeply affecting psychological piece here, with some tragically beautiful photography and cinematography on show.
This is certainly a film not made for enjoyment, but it is one that will most certainly stay with you for weeks and weeks. Be weary of it's grasp: the final shot before black out, in particular, is devastatingly chilling.
