MARTHA MACY MAY MARLENE is a staggering downright extraordinary independent film. This little movie will creep up on you and never let you go. Amazing direction from first-timer Sean Durkin and stellar performances all around especially from Elizabeth Olsen who is simultaneously fragile and tough as nails.
How does she do it? Once again I was stunned by what an actor can do. But most importantly, Olsen is part of a larger whole. For me this film was about the frailty of the "self." Who are we? Can we really know ourselves? Or are we only the by-product of outside forces.
This film works on so many levels--see it as a subtle thriller, a human story, or a deep introspective and provocative work of art. An amazing film. Also, read the reviews and you'll be stunned by all the different readings of this film.
