Review of Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) by Tvjerry — 13 Nov 2011
With such a lyrical title, you'd think this was a sweet story about a young girl, but you'd be wrong. Elizabeth Olsen (younger sister of the twins) plays a very troubled young woman who leaves a small cult to find refuge with her sister.
Even though she's separated physically, she can't escape the emotional damage. The film alternates between both worlds without ever giving enough resolution in either (don't get me started on the ending).
The narrative flow is disrupted by brief scenes that dole out snippets of revelation, but never build to a cohesive whole. The slow pacing only adds to the frustration.
