Review of Martha (1974) by Rachel B — 04 Aug 2009
While vacationing in europe, a young womans father unexpededly dies. When she returns home, we discover her mom is a complete bitch and she feels alone. Enter Helmut, who sweeps her off her feet but as we the audience soon realize, Helmut is a complete psychopath.
R.W. Fassbinder creates a terrifying film about spousal abuse, both psychical and mental. The camerawork is beautiful as the camera precisely shows up exactly what is neccessary in a very artistic, yet simplistic way.
Barbara Valentin gives an amazing performance as the title character, Martha, and by the end of the film you, the audience member, is just in so much pain for her.
