Review of Marshland (2014) by Susan M — 08 Jun 2015
Marshland turned out to be a very satisfying and atmospheric film noir about two very different types of detectives working together on the grisly murders of young teenage women in a small remote community in Spain.
This is a well executed murder mystery, which both myself and partner found captivating. We were on the edge of our seats for most of the time. The two detectives are very different from one another but find they need to get along.
One, Juan, is an old style policeman from the Franco era. Juan's style is gruff and, at times, brutal.. The other, Pedro, a younger man, identifies more with the new generation of the post Franco period.
Pedro displays sensitivity and thoughtfulness throughout. The photography and sound are superb. The shots of the rice fields and waterways from high above in the sky looking down are amazing. It is a great movie, not least, because the film does not tell you what to think.
It is understated and you could miss the ending. But what a surprise ending it is.
