Review of Mars Needs Moms (2011) by Tyler R — 16 Apr 2013
The concept is interesting enough, but the mo-cap and the writing don't do it any sort of justice. "Mars Needs Moms" follows the story of a kid as he tries to get his mom back from martians on Mars.
Sounds pretty good, right? Well, the execution was definitely way off. First of all, the visuals are dark and grim, which is the exact opposite of what a kid's movie should be. There is no charm or fun to be seen.
It's a very creepy film. The mo-cap is also creepy which doesn't help at all. The eyes are lifeless and cold, as they are with mo-cap films, but the rest of the film looks like it's a horribly darkened video game cut scene.
The acting is alright, mostly from Joan Cusack who isn't even in the film for very long. At the end of the day, all of the bad reviews and word of mouth were right and I should have kept away. I hope you do, too.
